Phragmites Control

Phragmites Control

phragmites-3HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

We are looking for a concerned group of neighbours to learn about the invasive species called Phragmites which I am certain you must have noticed in the ditches all around our area.  This plant intends to make its home in any place it can, but especially loves the wet areas including our wetlands and our beach.  This is not a joke!  It will clog all the wetlands and make our beach a thing of the past.  We will no longer be able to swim, boat, fish as we will no longer have access to the waters because of this densely growing, very tough weed. You can see its profile along the beaches at Kettle Point.  We do not want it to get that far!!!

I would love to go on and on about the seriousness of this scary plant but you probably are already aware of it.  It has been allowed to flourish because it is also quite a handsome specimen and we have allowed it to creep in, even welcoming it.  BUT now the threat is confirmed and we must act quickly and aggressively before it is too late.

As you walk along the beach now, it is easy to see just how much has moved in unnoticed.  With all the latest erosion, the roots are quite visible and the extent is obvious.   Naturally we all think “protect the beach”, but this is not the only battle front.  Notice the wet areas, maybe on your property, and I am quite sure you will see at least the beginnings of this invasion.  I will not go into the seriousness of this as we can discuss it all at great length.

We are looking for folks who are determined to stop this invasion and are willing to give some time to the project.  We will not be alone as there are experienced activists in our immediate area who just waiting for us to ask for their help and who have the knowledge and expertise to help us get this accomplished.  Both Local and Federal governments are also involved, even financially. So it must be serious…

Please get in touch with me if you are interested.

Hopefully

  1. Love to help Ellen but I am not able to be at Ipperwash as much as I would like. Does the project need any financial support. Happy to contribute towards that if needed.
