Phrag Friday: Is It or Isn’t It?

Identification – Is It or Isn’t It?
To control Phragmites it is important to know the difference between invasive Phragmites (Phragmites australis subspecies: australis) and native Phragmites (Phragmites australis subspecies: americanus). The following chart helps to distinguish non-native Phragmites from the native subspecies in the Great Lakes region.

To view pictures that highlight these differences, check out: http://mnfi.anr.msu.edu/phragmites/native-or-not.cfm
Still not sure, here are some video clips that may help:

So . . . is it or isn’t it? Ask yourself these questions:
What colour are the stems?
What colour are the leaves?
How quickly do the stems break down?
How dense are the seedheads?
