Ipperwash Environment

Lake Huron (French: Lac Huron) is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Hydro-logically, it comprises the easterly portion of Lake Michigan–Huron, having the same surface elevation as its westerly counterpart, to which it is connected by the wide Straits of Mackinac. It is shared on the east by the Canadian province of Ontario and on the west by the state of Michigan in the United States. The name of the lake is derived from early French explorers who named it for the Huron people inhabiting the region. The huronian glaciation was named due to evidence collected from Lake Huron region. The northern parts of the lake include the North Channel and Georgian Bay. The main inlet is the St. Mary’s River and the main outlet is the St. Clair.

• IPP - Ipperwash Phragmites Phighters - The Ipperwash Phrag Phighters (IPP) is a group of local residents, cottage owners, renters and visitors who want to stop the growth and spread of invasive Phragmites australis in the Ipperwash area. Working under the umbrella of the Lambton Shores Phragmites Community Group (LSPCG), the purpose of the IPP is to educate Ipperwash users to Phragmites: what they are; where they are; how to identify and control their spread; and why we need to take action NOW!
• International Joint Commission - The International Joint Commission prevents and resolves disputes between the United States of America and Canada under the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty and pursues the common good of both countries as an independent and objective advisor to the two governments. In particular, the IJC rules upon applications for approval of projects affecting boundary or transboundary waters and may regulate the operation of these projects; it assists the two countries in the protection of the transboundary environment, including the implementation of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the improvement of transboundary air quality; and it alerts the governments to emerging issues along the boundary that may give rise to bilateral disputes.
• US Army Corps of Engineers - Detroit District - Great Lakes water level data and forecasts, basin conditions, outflows, and other information relating to Great Lakes water levels.
• Fisheries and Oceans Canada - A network of gauging stations on both sides of the border on each lake is used to determine the average water level for the month.
• St. Clair Conservation - The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority is located in southwestern Ontario and includes the Sydenham River watershed and smaller watersheds draining directly into southern Lake Huron, the St. Clair River and northeastern Lake St. Clair. The Conservation Authority implements programs to reduce the risk to life and property from flooding and erosion; water and land stewardship; forestry; wildlife habitat creation and outdoor recreation.

• Ontario Phragmites Working Group - Ontario Phragmites Working Group (OPWG) is composed of dedicated people with an interest in working together to facilitate effective management of invasive Phragmites in Ontario.
• NOAA - Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory - A trusted scientific enterprise to advance observation, modeling, understanding, and prediction of the Great Lakes and coasts to sustain resilient ecosystems, communities, and economies.
• Shoreline Clean-Up - Our mission: to promote understanding and education about shoreline litter issues by encouraging Canadians to rehabilitate shoreline areas through cleanups. Our vision: a fully engaged and committed Canadian public keeping all Canadian shorelines free from litter.
• The Lake Huron Centre For Coastal Conservation - The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation was founded in 1998 with the goals of protecting and restoring Lake Huron's coastal environment and promoting a healthy coastal ecosystem.
• Lake Huron Georgian Bay Framework for Community Action - The Lake Huron Georgian Bay Framework for Community Action strives to empower people to take action to protect and enhance the health of the Lake Huron-Georgian Bay Watershed. The community based approach empowers individuals, communities and organizations to operate independently and through their own actions to protect and enhance Lake Huron Georgian Bay.
• The Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System - Approximately 5,000 square kilometers of the greater London area of South Western Ontario is supplied by two Water Treatment Systems: The Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System & Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System.
• Great Lakes Commission - The Great Lakes Commission consists of three to five representatives from each of its eight member states composed of state legislators, agency officials, and/or governors’ appointees. The chair of each state delegation serves on the Commission’s Board of Directors. The Governments of Ontario and Québec appoint delegates to the Great Lakes Commission, consistent with their Associate Member status under the terms of the Declaration of Partnership.
