Local Bird Counting

Local Bird Counting

Are you interested in counting birds?

Volunteers are welcome to join up with local birders to cover our local area or entire count circle [see map] for the annual Christmas bird count.

Some count areas are more in-car, looking for birds in farmers’ fields and towns with an occasional short hike. In these cases, there is at least one experienced birder in the vehicle, with assistants offering extra eyes.

If you prefer a more active day. a groupĀ of people hike over much of Pinery Provincial Park between 8 am and 5 pm. It is a long, usually cold day, but it is a lot of fun.

Finally, there is an option of counting birds at a bird feeder, either your own (so long as it is within this circle [see the map] or at the Pinery visitor centre.

There is no fee to participate, but volunteers are only allowed free entry into Pinery if they’re participating in the full day hiking portion (and all volunteers can enter free for a $5 chili dinner provided by the Friends of Pinery at the end of the day). You’ll need to bring your own lunch and snacks, and wear lots of warm layers and sturdy boots.

All volunteers need to register here prior to count day and can do so here:

We make sure new birders are paired with experienced ones, so it is a great opportunity to be introduced to the activity. Hope to see you out!
